A successful lighting scheme needs a focal point and for the diner the table must obviously be it. Lets concentrate light over the centre of the table which can be done in a number of ways. The centre of a table is a great place for a shaded pendant to lower the eye to where we want to draw attention and illuminate the place settings. A chandelier in this position will need some assistance from a couple of narrow beamed downlights to do the same job. No pendant required then put those downlights to work at all times of day and highlight the fruit bowl or flowers as a centre piece.
We can turn this scenario into a moodier setting by dimming the ceiling light, loose the downlights and eat by candlelight. Our lighting needs to work with us, not against us.
Surely for light to have impact we need some darks to contrast? Leave the areas away from the table unlit but broken up with pockets of light. Find a feature in the room to highlight a fireplace say and artwork.
Our dining rooms can often be multi functional places, so we must cater for another scene which is brighter and flatter in light terms.
