Designing interiors is a multi layered business and it takes a lot of mental juggling to make the project perfect. But like any artist envisaging their masterpiece for the first time – along with the subject and the composition they need to decide on the light! In fact deciding on where the light emanates in a picture is probably step two in every great work of art.

That is why I offer a comprehensive guide to all the lights available to designers and how they will affect the room, or space, that they are designing. After all it’s not just the look and shape of the light but the way it works over the paintwork, fabrics and finished surfaces. That is not to mention how it impacts on the people living in the room itself – whatever the function.

Take a moment this Christmas to see the power of lighting. Essentially Christmas is at the darkest time of year and marks a pagan festival of light stretching back to prehistory. Notice the texture and cast of candle light to the exhilaration of bright LEDs. Even flashing fairy lights have an interesting impact on the scene.
